The UMC Utrecht is looking for participants
In the
CortiCom study we are looking for people (between the ages of 18 – 70 years old) with severe paralysis and communication difficulties, or have a high chance of developing this condition within two years, caused by traumatic brain injury, a brainstem stroke, or neurodegenerative or neuromuscular disorders such as ALS. We are investigating a new means of communication based on brain signals.
Why are we investigating this?
In the Netherlands, each year several thousands of people suffer from neuromuscular or neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS. This can lead to severe communication difficulties. This issues can also arise after traumatic brain injury or a brainstem stroke. Existing assistive technologies for communication are based on residual muscle movements, such as eye movements. Unfortunately, these technologies do not work well for everyone, or in every disease stage.
At the department of Neurology and Neurosurgery of the UMC Utrecht, we investigate the possibility of controlling communication assistive technology based on brain signals. Previous research has shown that this is possible, but that the speed of communication can be improved. In the CortiCom study, we are investigating if communication through brain signals can be faster and more efficient by using a new type of brain implant.
What does participation entail?
The study lasts about 1 year, but extension is possible. First, a couple of tests are done to evaluate if you are a suitable candidate for participation, for example an MRI scan. If you are eligible for participation, a silicon sheet with measure-electrodes is placed on the surface of your brain during a surgery at the UMC Utrecht. By means of these electrodes, your brain activity can be measured.
When you are back home after the surgery, our researchers will frequently visit you. During these visits you will be trained to use the CortiCom system for communication based on your brain signals. Recordings of your brain signals will also be made.
Who can participate?
Suitable candidates are between 18 and 70 years old, have severe paralysis and communication difficulties or have a high chance of developing this condition within two years. Possible causes may be for example traumatic brain injury, stroke, neurodegenerative disease or neuromuscular disease (such as ALS). Candidates should still be able to communicate, by means of for example eye blinks, and should not be cognitively impaired.
