Current and future studies

The UMC Utrecht is internationally known as a leading centre for implantable Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs). After the succes of a previous study, we would like to help more people to communicate or to control for example a phone or a tablet. With novel, innovative implants, we hope to help people communicate better and faster and make it easy to use BCIs at home.

That is why we are conducting several studies, in which we focus on communication and digital device control. We also investigate user wishes

intrecom

Enabling fast communication and restoring greater independence is what we aim to achieve for people with paralysis and communication problems resulting from traumatic brain injury, brainstem stroke, neuromuscular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, or other causes.

intense

We would like to enable BCI control of digital devices such as a phone or tablet, for communication and entertainment, among other purposes.

We are conducting this research with people who cannot move their hands and arms properly, for example due to a spinal cord injury.

User wishes

We would like to know what challenges people face, how well current assistive devices work, and what the wishes and concerns are regarding BCIs.

The questionnaires are intended for adults with speech disorders due to severe paralysis and for their caregivers:
