The UMC Utrecht is looking for participants

In the INTRECOM study we are looking for people (between the ages of 18 – 70 years old) with severe paralysis and communication difficulties, or have a high chance of developing this condition within two years. Caused by traumatic brain injury, a brainstem stroke, or neurodegenerative or neuromuscular diseases such as ALS. We are investigating a new way of communicating based on brain signals.

Why are we investigating this?

In the Netherlands, several thousand people each year develop a neuromuscular or neurodegenerative disease such as ALS. This can lead to severe communication problems. These problems can also occur after traumatic brain injury or a brainstem stroke. Existing communication aids work based on remaining muscle movements, such as eye movements. Unfortunately, this does not work equally well for everyone or at every stage of the disease.

At the department of Neurology and Neurosurgery of UMC Utrecht, research is being conducted into controlling communication aids using brain signals. Previous research has shown that this is possible, but that the speed of communication can be improved. In the INTRECOM study, researchers are investigating whether communication via brain signals can be made faster and more efficient using a new type of implant.

What does participation entail?

The study lasts approximately one year, but an extension is possible. First, a number of tests will be carried out to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the study, such as an MRI scan. If it turns out that you can participate, a silicone mat with recording electrodes will be placed on your brain during surgery at UMC Utrecht. These electrodes allow your brain activity to be measured.

Once you are back home after the surgery, our researchers will regularly visit you at home. During these visits, you will be trained to use the INTRECOM system for communication based on brain signals. Measurements of your brain signals will also be taken.

Who can participate?

Suitable candidates are between 18 and 70 years old, have severe paralysis and speech problems due to traumatic brain injury, stroke, neurodegenerative or neuromuscular diseases (such as ALS), are still able to communicate, for example through eye blinking, and are not cognitively impaired.
